JOHN W. MARSHALL

FORT STEWART, GA.

Age: 50

Rank: Sergeant 1st Class, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division

Hometown: Hinesville, Ga.

John Marshall could have retired from the Army many times, but the ''old soldier'' kept answering reveille.

''He kept telling us he was going to get out,'' said his sister, Denise Marshall Mills. ''But that was his life; he was military.''

Marshall was killed April 8 by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade during an ambush in Baghdad.

Marshall was an avid fan of two-wheelers -- from bicycles to Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He lived with his wife, Denise, and had six children, ages 9 to 17.

He chose not to become an officer so he could remain in the field.

''I am not a politician, or policy-maker, just an old soldier,'' he wrote in his last e-mail home. 'I can't afford the luxury of being distracted by the `politics, social issues, or administration's rationale.' I cannot have any doubt about the righteousness of this mission.''

Martinez Flores was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. He came to the United States with his family at age 3. The eldest of four children, Martinez enlisted at age 18 to pursue his goal of going to college, said his mother, Martha Martinez.

''He had many dreams, many aspirations, and they ended,'' his mother said.

Mata lived in Amarillo with his wife, a teenage son and a young daughter, said his cousin, Javier Contreras.

''We share the pain with other families that have lost a loved one,'' Contreras said. ''He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.''

McGinnis was killed March 30 when his UH-1N Huey helicopter crashed in a non-combat accident in Southern Iraq.

McGinnis graduated in 1997. He married his high-school sweetheart, Megan Mahoney, in 1999.

In high school, McGinnis already knew he wanted to be a Marine, Holloway said. He recalled how hard McGinnis worked to pick up wrestling, keep up his grades and make friends.

''He wanted to be in Iraq,'' she said. ''He wanted to go. I didn't want him to go but I knew he needed to. That's what he did.''
