SCOTT JAMAR

HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, GA.

Age: 32

Rank: Chief Warrant Officer, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment

Hometown:Granbury, Texas

Scott Jamar felt he was wasting his father's money after a semester of college. His real desire was to fly helicopters.

After a decade as an Army flight engineer, Jamar began pilot training.

''He wanted to be a career man and he loved flying those choppers,'' said his mother, Aggie Oldfield of Belen, N.M. ''He knew he needed to be [in Iraq]. I told him I didn't want him to go, but he said that's why he joined the service.''

Jamar was killed April 2 when his UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed during combat near Karbala, Iraq.

Jamar was a lineman on the Sweetwater (Texas) High School football team when it was No. 1 in the state. He was president of the choir and student council, and was a disc jockey for a local radio station.

Jamar joined the Army in 1990.

''It took awhile, but he became a pilot,'' said his father, Wayne Jamar.

Jamar was father of two sons, Kyle, 7, and Brennan, 5, who live with their mother in Alabama.

EVAN T. JAMES

CAMP PENDLETON, CALIF.

Age: 20

Rank: Corporal, 6th Engineer Support Battalion

Hometown: La Harpe, Ill.

Evan James was studying to be a physical fitness trainer at Southern Illinois University and joined the Marine Reserves to help pay for college, said his aunt, Diane Kornegay.

James drowned March 24 while trying to cross a canal in southeastern Iraq.

James, 20, a triathlete studying at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville to be a personal trainer, ''had the biggest heart and would do anything for anybody,'' his aunt said. ''It is a tremendous loss of a great man.''

James played football and basketball at La Harpe High School, where he graduated in 2000, Principal Charles Apt said.

''He was just a normal kid, someone you feel good having over there doing that job, and we're proud of him for doing it,'' Apt said.

Marine Lt. Col. Steve Melbourne of the Marine Corps Reserve Center in Peoria said James joined the reserves after turning 18 and was rising through the ranks. ''He was a picture-perfect Marine.''

WILLIAM A. JEFFRIES

INDIANA NATIONAL GUARD

Age: 39

Rank: Specialist, D Company, 1st Battalion, 152nd Infantry Regiment, Indiana Army National Guard.

Hometown: Evansville, Ind.

A sad occasion brought William Jeffries home from deployment in Kuwait for a reunion with his five older brothers -- the March 6 death of their father.

''They hadn't seen each other in five years,'' Marie Jeffries, 71, said of her sons. ''There's nothing as wonderful as having your family together and talking about the silly things they did.''

Upon his return to Kuwait, Jeffries developed a blood clot in his lung and acute pancreatitis. He died March 26 at a military hospital in Rota, Spain.

A 1982 graduate of Evansville Reitz High School, Jeffries served 10 years with the U.S. Air Force and later joined the National Guard. He and his wife B.J. had been married two years.

TROY DAVID JENKINS

FORT CAMPBELL, KY.

Age: 25

Rank: Sergeant, B Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment

Hometown: Ridgecrest, Calif.

Troy Jenkins' last act of courage was no surprise to those who knew him and his love for God, America and his fellow human beings.

Jenkins succumbed April 24 to injuries he sustained five days earlier in Baghdad when an Iraqi child playing with an unexploded cluster bomb tossed the device toward him. Jenkins reportedly threw himself on the explosive as it detonated, saving the child and other soldiers.

''His last hours on this earth demonstrated his strong love for human beings,'' said his father-in-

law, John Buzzatto. ''We couldn't have asked for a better man.''

Jenkins joined the Marines at 17, then switched to the Army four years later. He studied Arabic and served in Afghanistan, where he was grazed by a bullet last year.

Jenkins met Buzzatto's daughter Amanda at a rodeo dance. They had two sons, Tristan, 4, and Brandon, 2.

Hometown: Mobile, Ala.

The Rev. Howard and Gloria Johnson waited 17 years for their first son, after having two daughters. Twenty-one years later, they lost him.

Howard Johnson II was killed Sunday when his company clashed with Iraqi forces.

"He was God's gift to us and the Lord has taken him away,'' said the elder Howard Johnson, 62, who pastors Truevine Missionary Baptist Church in Prichard, Ala.

The younger Johnson, known as "Junior,'' worked at a grocery store during high school. He would bring his friends' shoes home to shine when they couldn't afford shoe polish.

Johnson had hoped his son, who was in ROTC in high school, would attend technology college after graduation. But he chose active duty in the Army instead.

Johnson said he didn't like having his son in Iraq because he didn't agree with the war.

"I think this could have been handled through a diplomatic approach with enough time,'' he said. "He told me, 'Daddy, I have to do it.' ''

Johnson was killed March 25 when a grenade exploded nearby as he was helping a wounded comrade. He would have been 26 Monday.

''That's our hero,'' said his sister, Janissa Hooks. ``He did it for us and our country, so we can continue to be free. He made peace with God and himself before he went over.''

One of eight children, Johnson was born and raised in Little Rock and graduated from the University of Central Arkansas. He and his wife of three years, Cherice, had no children.

PHILLIP A. JORDAN

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.

Age: 42

Rank: Staff sergeant, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade

Hometown: Houston

Phillip A. Jordan fought in Iraq a decade ago in Operation Desert Storm, so he thought he knew what to expect, his wife said.

But there was no way he could have expected that a group of Iraqis would ambush his unit after pretending to surrender, Amanda Jordan said.

''My husband was the most prepared Marine there is, but you can't be prepared for the unknown,'' she said. ''They're saying he was killed in action, but for me it's really murder.''

Jordan and eight other Marines died in the ambush on March 23 near Nassiriyah.

Originally from League City, near Houston, Jordan graduated from Clear Creek High School, where he played on the football team and was a sprinter on the track team. His parents died while he was young, so he lived with family friends. He joined the Marines 15 years ago.

Jordan lived in Enfield, Conn., with his wife and their 6-year-old son, Tyler. He sent his son many letters, one of which included a map of the world for the boy to track his father's trip.
