RUBEN ESTRELLA-SOTO

FORT BLISS, TEXAS

Age: 18

Rank: Private

Unit: 507th Maintenance Company

Hometown: El Paso, Texas

For Ruben Estrella-Soto, joining the military was a means of both serving his country and escaping the wretched poverty of las colonias, one of dozens of communities along the U.S.-

Mexico border developed without running water or paved streets.

''He wanted to be an architect and a math teacher,'' said his mother, Amalia Estrella.

Estrella-Soto, the eldest of three children, immigrated with his parents from Ciudad Juáárez, Mexico. At Mountain View High School, he played baseball and football -- he was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan -- and graduated last year.

Like many young people from las colonias, Estrella-Soto expected the military to be a ticket to opportunity.

''These are the poorest of the poor,'' said the Rev. Ed Roden-Lucero, pastor of San Juan Diego Catholic Church, ''but they have sacrificed [on behalf of the nation] along with everyone else.''

DAVID EVANS, Jr.

FORT RILEY, KAN.

Age: 18

Rank: Private, 977th Military Police Company

Hometown: Buffalo, N.Y.

David Evans Jr. never got the chance to see his young son who everyone says is the spitting image of his father.

''He looks like his twin,'' said the baby's mother, Tamara Douglas. ''He's even going to be pigeon-toed like David.''

Evans was killed May 25 when the munitions facility he was guarding in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, exploded.

Evans enlisted after graduating from Kensington High School last June, and left home in August. He came home on leave in December, just one month before David Kevonta Evans was born.

''He was happy, rubbing my stomach and saying he couldn't wait 'til he could see him,'' Douglas said. ''We had planned to have a baby, live together, all three of us, and get married.''

Evans' father said his son died a hero, although killed by accident.

''He wanted to make something of himself, and that was his way to do it,'' said David Evans Sr. ''I'm proud of him.''

MARK A. EVNIN

TWENTYNINE PALMS, CALIF.

Age: 21

Rank: Corporal, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division

Hometown: Burlington, Vt.

Service in the Persian Gulf only intensified Mark Evnin's social awareness.

''He was a person always concerned about peace and welfare,'' said his grandfather, retired rabbi Max Wall.

''He had a social conscience,'' Wall said. In his last letter, from Kuwait, he was talking about going into international relations when he got back, or possibly into intelligence or security services.''

Evnin was killed in combat April 3 during a firefight in Central Iraq.

Evnin displayed an interest in technology at South Burlington High School.

''He'd spend hours helping elementary and middle school kids with their projects,'' said Tim Comolli, head of the school's imaging laboratory. ''Technology was innate with him.''

Evnin joined the Marines immediately after graduating in December 1999 because they were the most gung-ho,'' said longtime friend Travis Kehoe.

The residents of the Shell Point Retirement Community in Cape Coral always knew activities director David Fribley as a friendly and enthusiastic young man who hadn't quite figured out what he wanted to do with himself -- until Sept. 11, 2001.
