ROBERT J. DOWDY

FORT BLISS, TEXAS

Age: 38

Rank: Master sergeant

Unit: 507th Maintenance Company

Hometown: DeRidder, La.

Robert Dowdy could have chosen not to face combat in Iraq. Twice, he volunteered.

Assigned to the Patriot missile group at Fort Bliss, Dowdy accepted orders given to another soldier to go to Kuwait, said family friend James Crenshaw. Then he accepted an invitation to serve as first sergeant for the 507th when he could have stayed in Kuwait.

''That was just his way,'' Crenshaw said. ''If he thought he could keep someone else out of harm's way, he'd take the assignment.''

Dowdy graduated from Cleveland's South High School in 1982, then joined the Army three years later. He and his wife, Kathleen, have a daughter, Kristy, 14.

''That was probably the biggest joy in his life, having a daughter,'' said his brother, Jack Dowdy Jr.

Robert Dowdy was an avid distance runner, competing in races from five kilometers (3.1 miles) to marathons. He placed second in his age group in the 10K Trio Race in 2001.
